Borderline Cases
INtroduction:
The borderline case project actually started as "Conspiracy Investigators". Our original idea was to create some sort of fake news that we can do on our school to get a real understanding what fake news writers include in the making of their own stores and also see how we can manipulate the whole school into believing something. I was 100% in on it because it seemed like a lot of fun! Then I started realizing that we aren't really being taught anything. We decided to create fake news articles to get a deeper understanding at what fools people.
Original Conspiracy Presentation:
I did not know what MK Ultra was but my two partners were super into it so I decided to research with them. Project MK ultra is basically a mind control program that the CIA did. They experimented with drugs and different combinations along with other different types to create "the perfect soldier." (See slide show on the right for more information)
I think that MK Ultra was a real project that the CIA did. I believe that they may be doing those sort of projects still considering that technology has advanced. Also looking at all the evidence of CIA documents and clips of patients explaining about them being a victim of the project. |

Dr P's Hoax Website:
Immediately once I saw the webpage I knew it was Dr. P because the URL included weebly and that is what we use at school. Also I did research about the "ghost" and I looked up the photos and recognized from here in the school. Also how it is written sounds just like Dr. P. The "author" is someone who works at the other High Techs and the photo of him is a a dealership. Click on the button to see the website!

"My story so far":
Once we realized that pranking the school was not going to be a great use of our time, we wrote a paper about what we think of the project so far. Looking back on this since I wrote it a few weeks ago, I can tell how much emotion I had towards this project and how I wanted to switch it up because I wasn't really learning. Thankfully Dr. P listened to be and I was interviewed by the documentation group at the time and my voice really did make a big impact on the project. I wonder how would our exhibition turn out if we continued the prank and if we would have learned more.

Police report:
We read a case about a women named Queenie who walked into her house to find her husband on the floor dead. We had to write a report weather we believed Queenie or if she was lying. This was a way to learn about warrants and why it mattered. For example I wrote that her husband's drink is in his left hand and the stair rail is on the left so he couldn't have grabbed onto it. This also tied into whether we should trust her like if we should trust every article we read.

The biggest threat to journalism is...
We watched a couple Dan Rather videos and then we wrote an essay about what the biggest threat to journalism is. I wrote about how bias news can be a problem but that it's also good to have so you can look at both sides and get the "full picture." I do still agree with what I wrote and you can look at my whole essay to the right!

Ad campaign for colette:
We decided to name our vitamin "E00" because if you flip the E it will look like a 3 as in 300 years of life! We also put the photo of an older man that's surprised as if he can't believe what the vitamin does. In the text under the title we wrote that experienced scientist were saying something so that it seems more credible. The title also says a line that makes you wonder "what does it do?" to click on the article. These are all things that advertisers do to get people to click on their ads or articles!
Fake news olympics:
Honestly I did most of the work during this assignment. The only thing I didn't do was print out some things and the ads/pictures. Everything else was assigned to group members but they didn't follow through or put much effort into the task so I cleaned up what they wrote and they were okay with it. It wasn't hard to do but we would have gotten done much faster if everyone worked on it.
Final news story:
I decided to write about the wall because it seemed relevant with what's going on in the news right now and because we live so close to the border. Red flags that I included was the title, being bias, ads, and the URL (.co). Over the multiple drafts I basically just changed the layout of the article and how it looked. I asked multiple people for critique so I can fix any spelling or grammar mistakes. My 8th grade partner got all the red flags and he even highlighted key information! He did have a question for me which was why was the title one and I explained how article titles aren't in all caps and do not have multiple question marks or exclamation points.

Exhibition:
During the exhibition I was a cater so my role was to stand in the back with the food and help sell with someone else. I did not see if anyone read my article or get the chance to sit down with anyone which I really wanted to do. I did really feel happy when people actually came to our exhibition to see our work and not get food because I felt like they had an interest. We did raise about 60 dollars! If this exhibition was done again I would say to go sit down with the adults to go over the articles because even though I had a job to do I did see lots of my classmates looking nervous to talk and didn't know what to say when they did so.
