How i will take care of myself:
I chose the skeletal system because the Sarcoma cancer is the bones and tissues. It’s main function is to be a structure and provide support for the human and also protect the organs of the body while providing a range of movement. I chose this system because it connects directly to the type of cancer that my little cousin got in my story. I don’t think it would make sense to chose any other one because this is where the start of the disease happens and what changed me to discover my power. Also I feel like my power comes from the skeletal system because of how close my family got during the hard time for all of us. The skeletal system provides support and also protects vital organs (Chapter 33 “Protection, Movement and Support”). My family does so in the way that they are my support system, they grew me to be the person who I am today and they also protect me when I am a baby and fragile and also because that’s what we do as family members.

Sarcoma Cancer is what my little cousin had. I learned that it is called “Soft Tissue Cancer”, one of the two categories that sarcoma can be divided into, the other being bone. It is most common in the arms or legs, but my cousin’s started on her head and spread to her spine, so soft tissue to bone. This is a video that talks about the basic facts on sarcoma cancer. A surprising statistic I learned was it is a fairly rare cancer type, that there was only 60 cases in 2016. And that there are many different types of sarcoma cancer but they are all made out of connective tissues that their purpose is to hold the body together. I obviously chose this disease because it is the main topic of my story basically, the conflict. Cancer cells are developed when they are dividing and become more and more different, old or damaged cells survive when they should die, and new cells are created when they are not needed. The extra cells that were not needed divide without stopping and can form tumors, like what my cousin had.
For my cousin’s case, the doctors looked back to her biological parents, because she was adopted, to see their DNA. It was genetic. The DNA holds genes. Genes are responsible for making proteins, the molecules that determine all cell functions. Some genes contain instructions for proteins that control when our cells grow and divide. Certain genes that promote cell division are called oncogenes. Others that slow down cell division or cause cells to die at the right time are called tumor suppressor genes. Cancers can be caused by DNA mutations (defects) that turn on oncogenes or turn off tumor suppressor genes. Researchers still do not know why most soft tissue sarcomas develop in people who have no apparent risk factors. Since they do not know why they are developed, I cannot share some things that people can do to limit their chances of getting soft tissue sarcoma cancer.
But, since my system is the skeletal system I can share ways to keep your bones healthy, you could do the following to improve them no matter what age you are at.

- Healthy food choices
Your bones need a variety of nutrients, including calcium and vitamins, C, D and K. - Quit smoking
Smokers have lower bone mass and a higher risk of fractures than nonsmokers, so by not smoking you can start healthy choices and gain the strength back in your bones. - Exercise and maintain body weight
Bones become stronger when they are active. Weight-bearing exercise strengthens bones by making them produce more cells.
