Mad props project

In the Mad Props Project,  we had 4 "Voltron" Groups, 3 mini podcast groups within each one, all with a different proposition. I had propositions 62/66. Others had 57, 63 and 64. All of our goals was to educate the community about these props. before they voted on November 8th, 2016. To do so, we made podcasts and interviewed people to include in the podcasts.

Example Three; On this paper I was writing arguments for and against each prop. I chose this because it helped me see both sides.

Example Two; This was the first paper I got about prop. 62 and 66. I chose this because it  helped sum up the Death Penalty for me.
Example One; This was my annotation learning about the propositions 62/66. I chose this to show how much work I put into learning about the Death Penalty.

Podcast Pitch: “Bargaining with Death”

Scott Lewis from the Voice of San Diego came in to talk to our class and mentioned Mike and Penny Moreau. Right away I knew I wanted to do a podcast about their story. Their story was to do with what good does the death penalty do so we used that as our burning question. As I showed in my three hand outs, my group and I annotated as our research to learn about props. 62/66. We wanted to have a story for our podcast because it shows the different perspective you can have and that made us our magic formula. Since we already knew who we wanted to interview, our goal was to contact the couple and set up an interview.

interview map

To prepare for our interview with Mike and Penny, we organized it in order of events of how Timothy’s story took place. On top of the page you will see some very brief background information about Tim and what happened. We split the interview into four parts, and since we had four group members we all had a section to create questions for. I took over the “Getting to know Timothy Douglas Moreau” but after we all finished our sections we looked over each others and added to them. We wanted to be sensitive with our questions because it’s emotional topic to our interviewees.

tape log

Our interview went very well! We were set up in an office all sitting around a mic on a stool. If I had to choose my favorite part of the interview, I wouldn’t. I feel like every moment of the interview was very important to the whole story and how we can include all of it into our podcasts. After we logged our interview which is just listening to it and writing down key parts we hear. Again, we split it up into our same four parts like the interview map. Overall, Mike and Penny helped us learn about their story and perspective on the death penalty and we all really enjoyed and are grateful to have worked with them.

script outline/script

We made a short outline on a whiteboard and took a picture of it. I wrote on the whiteboard and was the facilitator for our discussion on what we should include. For our script we wrote about Timothy Douglas Moreau’s story and included clips from the interview so we can have Mike and Penny talk for some of the podcast. Over the course of the project, we tried doing a script then just a discussion but it ended up being two of us, me and my group mate Nicole, doing all of the narration because it was simpler.

final podcast

OUR PODCAST
The making of our podcast was a struggle. We had to record two times! First our audio got deleted on accident, second one was bad because of background noise and then we got our final audio which was just me and my friend Nicole. It was fun recording with Nicole because we would mess up and make some weird noise, then we’d go back to listen to all of our clips later and it’d be a surprise how many times we messed up! In the podcast, I was one of the narrators and it was a big part to do because we couldn’t mess up what when we are telling the story because it would be incorrect and would look bad. The “Golden moment’ for me was sitting down to listen to our final podcast and hearing it all come together with our background music and the interview clips.

exhibition

My role at exhibition was inside the soundbooth. I learned about sound and lighting in elementary so I thought why not! I sat in there the whole exhibition in control on how everything went. The only time I came out was when it was my podcast to be on stage and help my group answer questions. If I were to change anything about this project, it would be to have more time. When exhibition was almost here my group and others were rushing to finish. More time would have been helpful. I learned that all of your group mates won’t know how to pull their own weight so you have to be willing to take control of their job to get our work done. Also, don’t procrastinate because that just means less time!
