My internship site conducts clinical research on Anemia, Skin Infections, HIV/AIDS and Diabetes to name a few. Through these clinical trials, they determine the safety and effectiveness of medicine, treatments and devices on patients. Before a new medicine or treatment plan is put into place, doctors need to ensure that it is at the level it should be before it goes out on the market. This includes measuring the release of a medicine, the effectiveness until it wears off and the patient is due for another dosage. The patients who spend time at the facility follow a strict diet plan to track the progress. This helps both the doctors for testing and approving new medicine and such, and also the community by providing new treatments to help millions.

I am beyond excited to be working and shadowing alongside these doctors to see their day to day life keeping track of patients, testing the new medicines and possibly finding interest in a potential major for college. I really hope to focus on learning about medicine itself and how these doctors conduct the clinical trials and what it takes to get a successful outcome. I hope to make new connections and most importantly, enjoy my time there trying new things to make this experience memorable.

At my first day of internships, my task was to come up with an organizational system for the procedure carts that are constantly in use. My solution to the once messy cart was a chart of what materials is on each shelf to be checked off by the RA every morning and evening. This made sure the cart was fully stocked and prepared for the procedures during the day.

Some of the information needed for the graph was missing. Dr. Overcash took the time to look into the patient's charts, where I don't have access to due to private information, and helped me fill in the gaps. The kPa and Fibroscan score helped determine what the intensity level of the disease the patient is at. F0-F1 is the lowest to F4 being the most servere.

This is an ECG/EKG, an Electrocardiography. It is the process of recording the electrical activity of the heart over a period of time using electrodes placed on the skin. There is typically about 12 electrodes placed around the heart and chest. Here is an abnormal ECG, it is studied by the small points in between the grided boxes.
